With a population of over 5 Lakhs it is 135 kms to the south of Chennai and lies on the east coast i.e. the coast of Bay of Bengal. Established as a city of 1673, it was the capital of French India till 1954.

The International Yoga Festival of January and the Veerampattinam Car Festival are the two famous carnivals of Pondicherry.
