Mural Art Museum
Painting done on a wall is referred as Mural painting and the art form following this pattern is called Mural Art.
Kerala State is known for its culture of promoting arts and crafts, installing various institutions for music, dance, art forms of painting, sculpture art etc and The Mural Art museum at Trissur is one of the renowned museums carrying archaic paintings belonging to Mural art form. The venue of this museum is the Kollengode Palace situated of Trissur area of Kerala.
This museum is intended to appreciate and propagate Mural art forms of painting among future generation people.
Mural art was applied of ancient times mainly for decorative purposes, making halls and rooms impressive with the paintings of that form, sometimes also to give an illusion that the rooms are bigger than what they are. Kerala State has many sites with Mural art works, including Anjanad valley rock paintings of Idukki district, besides those adorning the walls of many temples.
Mural paintings are thematic too, such as human beings of different characteristics depicted by different colours, some of the paintings expressing society’s concerns, view-points and values, because they are of nature that the members of public can view them as they enter the hall adorned by Mural paintings.
This Mural Art Museum at Trissur was established of 1938, when SreeMulamChithrasala was organised. However, it was improved and made more informative of 2009 when public was permitted to enter the museum.
Mural Art Museum has wonderful collection of murals from almost all places of Kerala State, also preserving life size statues of prominent kings, tribal heads, artists etc and a number of artefacts which are special for Kerala, most of them procured from Trissur and Wayanad districts.
Mural paintings of ace artists like V S Unni Nair, T R Madhava Warrior, N O Antony etc are very valuable collections of this museum.
The museum also exhibits various forms of art works, besides mural paintings, for instance the following collections exhibited of the museum are very interesting :
- Veerakallu stone carvings, which are very popular of this region
- Megalithic utensils and wares
- Different kinds of Pottery
- Urns of ancient times used for burials
- Stone age tools
- Excavation items from Harappa
- 10th Century Sculptures, including those made of bronze
- Kerala’s Nenmeni village excavations
How to Reach
Trissur is a prominent station of Kerala, having rail and road connectivity of abundance. Trissur Railway Station is a major junction of Southern Railways having link with all destinations of the country.
Buses from all destinations of Kerala and nearby states do operate to Trissur and commuting by road of Kerala is always pleasant, besides very safe of spite of hilly road sections, because of the good traffic regulations that the State administers.
Cochin International Airport is 55km away from Trissur comforting air travellers reach this place.

Trissur’s Mural Art Museum is open for public on all days except Mondays, between 9 am and 4 pm.
